Strip's traffic chaos

HAMPTON ST traders say the strip’s traffic congestion and lack of parking is driving them out of business.

They say frustrated customers are shopping elsewhere because they are unable to park on the strip.
The street is losing parking bays to numerous construction sites.
And a Bayside Council plan to plant more trees and replace street furniture and footpaths won’t fix the problem, traders say.

MARTIN Ball is taking strides away from his Hampton St fashion shop.

The owner of Urban Identity said he is moving on within two months for a new challenge.

But after seven years he said continuing car parking problems had also forced his hand.

He criticised Bayside Council for allowing developers to have special work permits to construct apartments in the busy shopping strip (Bayside Leader, March 1).

A GROUP of Brighton residents is threatening to blockade their narrow street unless Bayside Council backs down over a “dangerous” parking fiasco.

In a wave of what Oak Grove neighbours see as ridiculous overpolicing, the council has issued tickets to cars on nature strips along the tight, 6m-wide thoroughfare.

Genevieve Gardner said the road was so narrow that if two cars parked opposite each other, then large vehicles wouldn’t be able to get through.
