A GROUP of Brighton residents is threatening to blockade their narrow street unless Bayside Council backs down over a “dangerous” parking fiasco.
In a wave of what Oak Grove neighbours see as ridiculous overpolicing, the council has issued tickets to cars on nature strips along the tight, 6m-wide thoroughfare.
Genevieve Gardner said the road was so narrow that if two cars parked opposite each other, then large vehicles wouldn’t be able to get through.
She said residents had to park on the nature strip to allow access, so owners shouldn’t be fined.
“It is dangerous for cars on both sides to be parked on this road,” Ms Gardner said.
“And what about emergency vehicles? If we parked as the council wanted us to, it would risk lives.”
She said residents may bring traffic to a halt by staging a “car parking exercise” before next Monday’s rubbish collection unless fines were revoked.
A ticket she got last month would not be paid, she said.
Neighbour Robin Brown said he was upset he had been fined three times.
“There is no harm in putting a couple of wheels on the nature strip - in fact, we need to as it’s to everyone’s benefit (to get past) and no one’s detriment,” Mr Brown said.
But Bayside Council acting infrastructure services director Charles Turner said they were just enforcing State Government law, as parking on nature strips obstructed pedestrians and road users.
He said it was up to residents to make sure there was a 3m gap for vehicles to pass.
If temporarily blocked, garbage trucks would continue to return until they had access, he said.
He said fines would not be revoked.
